Hopefully the next time you hear from me will be news that forwarding and filtering are up and running. ... This message is the first serious test of the outgoing mail queueing system. "If you did not get this message and you should have, please contact me." Ha ha. We're clearly a long way past "early 2003" but work is continuing. A major issue was the receiver's view of the messages waiting to get to you. Since presenting a daily list of mail that you have not preapproved doesn't really help much, we're not going to, at least not at first. All un-pre-approved mail will be bounced immediately. What we are going to have instead of a way to see who is waiting in line in front of the nightclub that is your inbox, to continue with the metaphor of pay-to-send as a doorman, are a set of passwords that you can declare and share and undeclare and forget about easily. The password system will also facilitate mailing list subscriptions: declare the name of the mailing list as a password for your inbox, then subscribe to the list, and the verification message from the listserver will be allowed through, and you will be able to declare a network peer address whitelist entry for the listserver. There are some edge cases that this approach will not be ideal for, but in general it will get us up and going. To quote Lou Gerstner, "sooner is better than perfect." Thanks for your continuing patience, David Nicol
